Asics Gel Kayano 25
Happy Birthday Asics Gel Kayano!
Now in its 25th year the luxury structured cushioned shoe is still going strong, I bet even Toshikazu Kayano who designed the first edition (inspired by the Stag beetle would you believe) back in 1993 wouldn’t have believed his masterpiece would still be with us a quarter of a century later.
Having worked in the industry for over 30 years, I have been privileged to witness the development of the Kayano from its first edition to now the 25th version, and have run in most of them over the years.
The 1993 original, dubbed the Gel-Kayano Trainer, launched with two different styles of gel in the rearfoot and forefoot. It included suede overlays, albeit with some mesh. It was typical of the early days of stability running with a weight that would be unheard of in today’s shoes. By 2000, Asics’ sixth version took on a new shape to absorb impacts. The 16th style, in 2010, aimed to stabilize a runner’s foot by keeping it straight while he or she ran. In 2016, the 23rd version introduced a new FlyteFoam that was 55 percent lighter than the industry standard.
For the 25th anniversary model, designers dipped further into the research of the Kobe lab and created two new styles of FlyteFoam—Lyte and Propel—to merge with gel. The result is a full evolution of running shoe that goes far beyond what was possible in 1993. In the Gel-Kayano 25, lab technicians created FlyteFoam Lyte with nanofibers between air bubbles—200 times thinner than the previous use of microfibers—for a 20 percent enhancement in strength and durability while creating a lighter product.
This new version does not disappoint, with lots of intricate features and the latest Asics technology it makes for a super cushioned and supportive shoe, The jacquard mesh upper creates an exceptional fit, whilst the Flytefoam light & Flytefoam Propel technologies coupled with the guidance trusstic system gives a lovely smooth transition and a comfortable ride.
The innovative ASICS technologies such as rearfoot and forefoot GEL® Cushioning System, the now synonymous full length guidance line, the I.G.S® (for enhanced gait efficiency), as well as the DYNAMIC DUOMAX® midsole have all been introduced over the years and still exist today. Another example of the consistency and trust ASICS has in its technology.
